⚡ WHAT'S DIFFERENT IN 2v2

THE BLOCK COUNTS AS A TOUCH.

2v2 is the ONLY GGVB format where blocking counts as a team contact. You block → you have 2 hits left, not 3. (In 3v3, 4v4, and 6v6 the block does NOT count.)

SHORT COURT — 16m × 8m (52'6" × 26'3")

The basics

CourtShort — 16m × 8m
Players2. No subs (see Injury below).
Block counts?YES — 2 hits after a block
Scoring — pool1 set to 21 (default), or 2 sets to 18 on a long day — per your pool sheet. Hard cap either way (21–20 / 18–17 wins). No deuce.

Scoring — FINALBest 2 of 3, sets to 15, hard cap 15.
SwitchesSets to 21: every 7. Sets to 18: every 6. Sets to 15: every 5.
Timeouts1 per team per set, 45 sec. No technicals.
PositionsNone. No rotation, no serve-order restriction on the court.

Serving

  • Fixed serve order. After the first serve of the set: if your team wins the rally, the same player serves again. If your team wins the rally on the opponent's serve, the player who did not serve last time serves now.
  • Serve from anywhere between the sidelines.
  • Switching sides of the court is unrestricted. Play wherever you want.
  • No courtesy serve rule in Coed 2v2 — serve at whoever you like.

Blocking

  • The block is your first contact. Two hits remain.
  • Collective block (both players touch it together): counts as one contact — the first. Either player may take the next hit, including the blocker.
  • Any player may make the first contact after a block.

Setting (the one people argue about)

  • Hand-setting the serve is legal — judged to your Division's standard.
  • Ball may never drop below the chin. All Divisions.
  • Spin tolerance: Open/A = less than 1 full rotation. B = 2. C/Junior = 3.
  • Setting over the net: Open/A/B only — shoulders square, zero rotation. C and Junior may NOT set over the net at all — automatic point to the opponent.
  • Open-hand tips are illegal. Knuckle, cobra, pokey, or roll it.

Injury — 2v2 is special

  • 5-minute recovery, once per match.
  • Open Division: if a player can't continue, they're out for the rest of the match.
  • A Division and below, if a player can't continue and you have no rostered sub:

You play 1v2 for the rest of the set. The solo player gets all 3 touches. Lose that set → you forfeit the remainder of your matches. Win that set → you keep playing.

Expulsion / DQ

  • Disqualified (repeated rude / offensive conduct): team forfeits that set. Player returns next set.
  • Expelled (aggression): team forfeits the match and the rest of the event. One player cannot continue alone.

Coed 2v2

  • Net at Men's setting, no leveling blocks.
  • More than one contact → a female player must make one of them.
  • One-contact returns are always legal.

Reverse Coed 2v2

  • Net at Women's setting.
  • Men may not attack the ball from above the top of the net — even standing, even if you're tall enough to reach over without jumping.
  • Men may not block. At all. Any male blocking contact is a fault.
  • More than one contact → a male player must make one of them.

Forfeit / late

  • 2 points to your opponent for every full minute you're late.
  • 10 min late = forfeit the set. 20 min = forfeit the match.
  • Forfeit score: 0–21.

Pool tiebreakers

  1. Set record (sets won − sets lost)
  2. Head-to-head — set record between the tied teams only
  3. Point differentialcapped at ±10 per set. Running up the score earns nothing.
  4. Seed
